Hatt Corporation

HATT Corporation is a non-profit organization that has a simple goal in mind.  HATT stands for Helping And Teaching Together.  The organization was started in 2010, working on whatever resources are available so that the vision of helping other people can be shared to other people.  This year, HATT is facing a huge challenge.  With your help, they’re confident that they can continue the noble program that they started.  Read on to know more and to know how you can help.

What is your organization’s name?

HATT (Helping And Teaching Together) Corporation

What is your name and what is your affiliation with the organization?

My name is Altonya Sheppard and I am the Founder/CEO of HATT.

Please tell us a little bit about you.

At the age of four, I began helping others by giving sandwiches and snacks to the homeless I would see on my way to school. The desire to assist others continued to cultivate the older I became. By age 11, I began a youth creative arts program in my community. Throughout my life, I continued to develop programs and have worked in the field of social/human service for about 15 years. In 2010, I decided to create Helping And Teaching Together so that the vision can be broadened and available resources could be utilized.

How / why did your organization start? (Background, History)

HATT wants to help those belonging to low-income families. The organization believes that poverty is not a reason for recidivism and desperation. With our programs, this challenge can be addressed.

What is your organization’s objective? (What does it do?)

HATT’s goal is to help low-incomed children, adults, families, and communities break the cycles of poverty, recidivism, and desperation through education, training, counseling, mentoring and other services.

We are currently in need of space, funding sources, fundraiser supporters and sponsors for our upcoming Christmas drive. The photos above is from one of three Christmas events last year.

Email Interview: International Ballet Exchange (IBE)

International Ballet Exchange
International Ballet Exchange (IBE) is not your usual ballet school.  It is actually a non-profit organization that aims to bring the beauty of ballet to students who normally wouldn’t have had the chance to study high-quality ballet.  Its commitment is more on providing students from low-income families the chance of experiencing classical ballet education and opportunities to perform.  However, IBE is also committed to providing the same opportunities to a wide variety of students; race, ethnicity and socio-economic background notwithstanding.  Read on to know more.

What is your organization’s name?

International Ballet Exchange (IBE)

What is your name and what is your affiliation with the organization?

Nancy Malmed, founder and Executive Director

Please tell us a little bit about you.

I am also the founder and Artistic Director of Wissahickon Dance Academy, a full range dance school in Germantown, specializing in classical ballet. The school has been in existence for over 25 years.  I am married and have three children.

How / why did your organization start? (Background, History)

IBE became a non-profit organization in 1998 with the idea of giving ballet students the opportunity to perform in a professional production of The Nutcracker with the Donetsk Ballet of Ukraine.  In 1999  we began a ballet residency program at Simon Gratz High School with ballet training by a Russian Ballet Master over 12 weeks and a performance opportunity for 25 students.  We have since expanded the residency program to cover the full academic year (30 weeks) and now have residencies in 4 public schools, reaching 130 students.  We provide free tickets for the residency students to see The Nutcracker. We also give these children a performance opportunity at the end of the school year.  Since 1998, we have continued to give students who study privately the opportunity to perform with the Donetsk Ballet’s Nutcracker annually.

What is your organization’s objective? (What does it do?)

IBE’s goals are: to provide quality classical ballet training to low-income students who are not typically exposed to ballet and do not have access to quality ballet training; to expose students to the beauty of ballet performance and also ballet masters who serve as positive, inspirational role models; to bring the highest quality of ballet performance to students in the Philadelphia School District who rarely have access to it; to give students an opportunity to perform and to have a goal to work towards – to learn what it takes to reach a goal, and to increase their appreciation of ballet as an art form. We also aim to serve at least 3,700 Philadelphia residents each year.

How long has the organization been around?

Since 1998

What kind of events / activities does your organization do?

We have open auditions every September for ballet students ages 5-18 for children’s parts in the Donetsk Ballet of Ukraine’s production of The Nutcracker which is performed every December for the general public as well as reduced rate tickets for the Philadelphia School District.  We begin our residency programs in October with weekly ballet classes for 130 students in 4 public schools in Philadelphia.  In late May, the residency students perform with a small number of children who study privately at Wissahickon Dance Academy in a production of a classical story ballet.  The performances take place at George Washington High School and are free for the Philadelphia School District.  IBE provides costumes and dance attire for the residency students.  Past ballet performances have included, Alice in Wonderland, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, La Fille Mal Gardee, The Four Seasons, and many others.
