Email Interview: MANNA

MANNA

Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance or MANNA is a non-profit organization that aims to improve health by delivering nourishment.  It sounds like something that anyone can do.  But you’ll be surprised at the number of people who don’t have access to basic nourishment.  This is especially true with people that are battling life-threatening diseases since they are at acute nutritional risk.  In addition to delivering nutritious meals, MANNA also provides counsel to people who need it.  This two-part approach helps people improve the quality of their lives.  Read on to know more about MANNA.

What is your organization’s name?

Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance or MANNA

What is your name and what is your affiliation with the organization?

Lindsay Cohen – Marketing and Media Manager

Please tell us a little bit about you.

MANNA is a local nonprofit located in Philadelphia, PA.  We are dedicated to improving the quality of life of our clients by providing nutritional meals and counseling, completely free of charge, to individuals in Southeastern PA and Southern NJ who are coping with various life threatening illnesses.

How / why did your organization start? (Background, History)

MANNA was formed in 1990 by seven members of The First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, to help nourish men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS.  In the early days of the organization, stigma and ignorance stood in the way of individuals and families receiving many of the services that were available to them. For MANNA, food was a way for caring members of the community to gain access and begin to help those in the greatest need.  From this modest initiative to serve food to those with HIV/AIDS, MANNA has grown into a vibrant volunteer driven, non-sectarian non-profit organization serving men, women and children in the greater Philadelphia area and Southern New Jersey.  MANNA expanded its mission in June 2006, to serve anyone who is at acute nutritional risk due to a life-threatening illness and continues to help those in the greatest need.

Service interruption – for a better service

We are currently undergoing some improvements on our website and had to set the site on maintenance mode on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for a substantial period of time.

We apologize for this un-expected service interruption as we needed to migrate to a new server urgently to accommodate increase in traffic to our network of sites.

If you have any concerns or questions please feel free to contact us.

How to promote your upcoming events with social media marketing? – Use our promotion tool

Now a days, almost everyone has at least one account on one of the many social media websites out there. Some big companies are enticing college students to tweet about their services by awarding gift cards. Others are giving out free coupons if people become a “Fan” on their company’s Facebook fan page. So why not join the movement?

This is why we created a unique event promotion tool on Eventsburgh.com. The idea is simple and here is how it works.

After you login on our site, find an event you want to promote and click on the “Promote it” button located on the event detail page

Promote it

After clicking it, you will be directed to a page that presents you a short unique URL (NOTE: you have to be logged in to see the short URL)

promote shor url

Copy the short unique URL and start distribute it to everyone you know by email, post it on your blog, Facebook, Twitter, Llinked etc

Each short URL is unique and is associated with your account, so every time someone clicks on the short URL you distributed you will get promo point(s). Once you reach to 5000 promo points, we will reward you with a gift card. Sounds cool huh?

Your source for free music by Pittsburgh artists | ThePittsburghScene.com

ThePIttsburghScene

We recently received an email from Craig Anderson, the founder of ThePittsburghScene.com regarding their artists milestone of reaching 300 local artists (Wow!!). Read the following to find out more about their exciting achievement.

Just eight months ago, when entrepreneur Craig Anderson developed ThePittsburghScene.com, it was with "equal parts inspiration and frustration" that he sought to improve upon the information available about Pittsburgh’s music community. Now with over 300 groups offering free downloads and a new musicians’ classified section added to the site, Anderson is cautiously optimistic about pursuing what so many others have claimed to do—bring the local music scene together.

"I’ve seen so many websites come and go, all claiming to ‘unite the scene’. I just felt it shouldn’t be a chore for people to find all the great talent out there, so the goal became making a central location with all information in one spot."

The waning social media giant, MySpace had been the go-to location for finding new music, complete with a feature that let users sort by city. When that feature was removed, Anderson saw an opportunity. ThePittsburghScene.com now has roughly 2,500 songs, all available for free download, and recently added its 300th artist to the site. The fans have the opportunity to check out the wealth of local talent, and this additional exposure for the artists helps to drive attendance at local shows and generate buzz.

The site also includes a comprehensive calendar of local concerts at more than 30 different venues— an improvement upon many calendar sites specific to one promoter or music genre. It was Anderson’s vision to make it an “’events site” more so than just a “’music site”. Similarly, the News section mines the media for the most relevant local music news items, in addition to original content.

Then when pghMusicAds.com, a musicians’ classified site, disappeared last August, Anderson stepped up to fill that void as well. "Craigslist still offers a musicians section, but scrolling through every post is the only way to navigate it." The Musician Classified section on thePittsburghScene.com separates the "wanted" from the offerings, and then sorts posts by instrument or singer. It also offers a section for other music related services, like graphic design and photography.

And ThePittsburghScene.com is not done improving upon things yet. "Next is streaming audio, so you don’t have to download each song". Beyond that Anderson is working with developers to continue to evolve to best meet the needs of both bands and fans alike.

So while Anderson won’t cop to "uniting the music scene" just yet, the site has doubled its traffic in just the last month. Combined with the commitment/support of the 300 artists that have jumped on board, he is confident the site is off to a good start. "It really wouldn’t be what it is without the support of the musicians."

Must read!! Free on-air advertising on My Pittsburgh TV

If you live in Pittsburgh then you probably know the TV channel “My Pittsburgh TV”. We recently found out an opportunity to get free on-air advertising. Following is the message from David Kerin who is involved in producing “TMZ” for My Pittsburgh TV.

“We produce a weekly :30 and :20 promo for My Pittsburgh TV called "PMZ" which we use to highlight events and happenings in Pittsburgh, so I will check this out. Also, if anyone has something happening that they may want mentioned please send it my way. The promos run throughout the week (then updated with new versions) and hit a good sized audience in our shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy (and all our other shows). Can’t promise it will run, but if we think it is something that fits what we’re doing we’ll get it in there.”

When we asked him the million dollar question, “how much does it cost?”, following was his answer

“No it doesn’t cost anything. PMZ gives us two things. One to get info out there of what’s going on around the city, and the other (and the business side) to offer additional value to our station’s AEs clients if they have something that fits into the promos. But every week we are looking through the web to see what is happening interesting in Pittsburgh to include. We actually love to use it just to get some info out there that people in PGH might not know about (kind of a stylized community calendar, for lack of a better description).

So if anyone has something just let me know. I can’t promise it will go on, but if we think it fits what we’re looking for we’ll get it in there. No cost. And I know people don’t always believe that, because I’ve met a few organizers and I’ve asked them to just give me the info and I’ll get it on air and I never hear anything. It amazes me people would turn away from a free on-air advertising, but you never know. The only thing we would have to do is check online or something to make sure it is legit. Would hate to put something on-air that’s not actually happening.
